CHURAIBARI: The Superintendent of Police for the North Tripura district of Tripura has taken several steps in the past regarding the prevention of the sale and movement of narcotics in the district. As a part of this fight, a police team was able to confiscate a large consignment of ganja during an operation.
Based on a tip, the Superintendent of Police, Bhanupada Chakraborty, Officer in charge of Churaibari Police Station Harendra Devbarma carried out a check in the region. The team was able to recover an estimated 250 kilos of dry ganja kept in 50 packets which were hidden in the vehicle. The twelve-wheeler truck carrying this consignment of narcotics is said to have borne registration number TR 01 Z1945. The driver was apprehended and the name of the 30-year-old was revealed to be Abdul Rahman, belonging to the Udaipur region which falls under the Rajdhanagar Kakrabar Region of the Gomtu district of the state.
The value of the seized narcotics is said to be around Rs 37.5 lakhs. The police official also mentioned that the consignment was on its way to be smuggled to other states. A case has been registered regarding the matter and the driver was taken into custody.
In the neighbouring state of Mizoram, the state police seized a large number of contraband drugs worth Rs 17 crore in Mamit district, informed officials on Sunday. The two accused have been identified as Md. Idrish Miah (36) and Khugon Das (28). According to Mizoram police, "Based on secret information, Mamit police on duty at a highway junction on June 23 night intercepted a car driven by Md. Idrish Miah of Tripura." During the search, the police team recovered and seized 270 soap cases containing 3.47 kg of heroin, valued at over Rs 17 crore in the international market, concealed in a secret compartment under the vehicle. A case has been registered under sections 1(c), 25, 29 ND, and the PS Act. Further investigation is underway, and details are awaited.
